Libre Sensor: 14 Days, and How to Spend Them
A sensor runs for exactly fourteen days and then stops on its own — which makes when you start it, and what you do in each half of that fortnight, worth deciding in advance.

Fourteen days sounds like plenty until you are actually inside them. A Libre sensor gives you exactly that — no pause button, no extension — and at Pakistani prices most people here wear one occasionally rather than continuously. That makes how you spend the fortnight a real question. Two people can wear identical sensors for identical fourteen days and finish with completely different amounts of useful information, and most of the difference is decided before the sensor ever goes on the arm.
Start it on an ordinary week
The clock starts when you start the sensor, and Abbott is precise about the ending: after 14 days of wear the reader tells you the sensor has ended (opens in a new tab), the sensor automatically stops collecting glucose data, and it should be removed. You are warned on the way — three days out, at the first scan of each day, and then at every scan during the final eight hours — but nothing lets you stretch or pause it. Fourteen days from a Tuesday morning means a Tuesday morning.
So choose the fortnight deliberately. If a wedding week, an Eid, exams or a trip to the village falls inside it, and that is not what you are trying to study, wait. A sensor spent on two weeks of unusual eating describes two weeks you will not repeat. The exception is when the unusual period is precisely your question: if you want to know what Ramadan or a fortnight of night shifts does to your glucose, that is the right fortnight to spend the sensor on — just choose it on purpose rather than by accident.
The first day is the least accurate day
Sensor accuracy is not flat across the two weeks. A Canadian study comparing FreeStyle Libre readings against plasma glucose at different sensor ages (opens in a new tab) found mean error of 14.5% for sensors aged 0–1 days, 7.8% at 5–7 days, and 14.7% at 13–14 days — least accurate at both ends of its life, most accurate in the middle. Abbott says much the same in its own support material: accuracy generally improves after the first day (opens in a new tab), because the sensor needs time to settle into the tissue around it.
That study was small — 14 adults and 36 sensors — so hold the exact percentages loosely. The shape is the useful part. If your sensor and your glucometer disagree on day one, that is expected behaviour rather than a faulty sensor, and it is not worth a phone call to the retailer. It also means day one is a poor day to draw conclusions from, which lines up neatly with the fact that you should not be changing anything yet anyway.
Whenever a number is about to change what you do — you feel low, you are treating a low, you are deciding on a dose — check it with your meter, and be especially willing to do that on the first and last day of a sensor's life. Keep a few strips available for the whole fourteen days.
Week one is for your ordinary life, unedited
The strongest instinct in the first few days is to behave well. The sensor is watching, the numbers are right there on your phone, and it feels natural to eat carefully. Resist it. If you eat like a model patient for fourteen days, you will finish with a precise map of a diet you do not actually follow, and nothing you can compare anything to afterwards.
Week one should be your normal roti at your normal time, the rice at your sister's on Sunday, the chai and biscuit at five. Write down what you ate and when — the sensor records the curve, but it has no idea what caused it, and a spike you cannot attribute to anything is just an interesting shape. Seeing 240 after a meal you eat every week is information, not a verdict on you, and it is exactly the sort of thing you paid the sensor to show you.
Week two is where you test one thing at a time
By around day seven you will have enough repeats for the pattern to be visible — which stretch of the day sits highest, whether the nights are flat, what the afternoon looks like. Pick the single worst stretch, change one thing about it, and give the change two full days before judging it. Two days of continuous data is a genuinely fast answer; the reason to change only one thing at a time is that when three things change together, a better graph tells you nothing about which one to keep.

The scan habit that decides whether any of this counts
One operational detail quietly ruins more fortnights than adhesive failure does. The Libre 2 sensor measures glucose every minute but stores readings for only eight hours at a time (opens in a new tab), handing over its stored record each time you scan. Go longer than eight hours without scanning and that stretch is gone permanently — no later scan recovers it.
The gap almost always lands overnight, which is the cruellest place for it, because the overnight hours are where the least obvious answers live: the slow climb toward morning, or a dip at 3am you slept through. Scanning last thing before bed and first thing on waking covers a normal night. Make it automatic for all fourteen days and you will finish with a complete record; skip it casually for a week and your report will describe a partial fortnight while presenting itself as a whole one.
What day fourteen should leave you with
Not a transformed HbA1c — two weeks cannot do that. What a well-spent sensor leaves you with is three or four sentences you can say out loud with confidence: my mornings start higher than I thought, dinner rice puts me above range for two hours, the walk after dinner visibly flattens it. Plus a report worth putting in front of your doctor, especially if it shows lows you did not know about.
Those sentences are the part that survives. The sensor goes in the bin on day fourteen; what you learned only keeps working if it is written down somewhere you will still be looking in six months.
The sensor stops on day fourteen. A log does not. Recording meals, medicines and readings in Diatic while the sensor is on is what lets you compare this fortnight to whatever comes next.
Frequently asked questions
Does the sensor really stop at exactly 14 days, or is there some leeway?
It stops. Abbott states that after 14 days of wear the reader notifies you that the sensor has ended, and the sensor automatically stops collecting glucose data and should be removed. You do get advance notice — a warning three days before, at the first scan of each day, then a warning at every scan during the final eight hours — so the end should not surprise you, but there is no way to extend it.
My sensor and my glucometer disagree on the first day. Is the sensor faulty?
Probably not. Both Abbott and independent research describe lower accuracy on day one while the sensor acclimates to the tissue, with accuracy improving through the middle of the wear period and dipping again at the very end. Treat day-one numbers as approximate, confirm with a finger prick before acting on anything, and only raise it with the retailer if the gap is still large after the first day or two, or if you are getting error messages rather than readings.
Should I plan my two weeks around Ramadan, or avoid it?
It depends entirely on what you want to learn. If your question is about ordinary daily life, Ramadan is a poor fortnight to spend a sensor on, because the eating pattern will not resemble the other eleven months. If your question is about fasting itself — what happens to your glucose through a long afternoon, or how a particular sehri holds up — then those are exactly the fourteen days to buy the sensor for. Decide before you start it, not halfway through.
